Mainz

The city of Mainz is located at the confluence of the River Main and the River Rhine. The origins of the city as a large settlement date back to 38 BC, when the Romans built a citadel here. Artefacts on display in the Landesmuseum show there have been settlements here since 300,000 BC.

The magnificent Mainz Cathedral is an architectural feat in the Romanesque style. Otherwise, visit the Gutenberg Museum, just opposite the Cathedral. The museum tells the story of Johann Gutenberg, who invented the movable type printing press in the 1450s, regarded by Time Magazine as the most important individual of the last millennium.

“Really excellent river cruise, fantastic value, the reason it's not 5 star was the train journeys, which were all late and chaotic, (not GRJ's Fault) although they bought the tickets they are not responsible (apparently) for the late trains, the Eurostar back for Paris was 2 hours late and meant...
